Referees Academy is led by Dion Willis, one of the most experienced and internationally respected figures in Water Polo officiating and referee education.
Dion currently serves as Vice President of World Water Polo Referees (WWR), representing Africa at a global level and contributing directly to referee development, standards, and governance worldwide. This role places him at the centre of how referees are trained, evaluated, and supported internationally.
With over two decades at the highest level of the sport, Dion brings a rare combination of elite officiating experience, international governance insight, and formal referee education expertise — ensuring Referees Academy is built on real match standards, not theory.
He has previously served in senior leadership positions including Chairman of the World Aquatics Referees & Officials Committee (ROC) and as a member of the World Aquatics Technical Water Polo Committee, where he was directly involved in referee appointments, evaluations, education standards, and competition oversight at the highest level of the game.
His officiating career includes appointments to the Olympic Games, World Aquatics Championships, World Cups, and World League Super Finals, officiating major knockout and medal matches under extreme pressure — a level of trust reserved for the sport’s most reliable officials.
Beyond officiating, Dion is a World Aquatics–certified Lecturer, appointed to deliver referee education and certification programmes worldwide. He has trained and accredited referees across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, working at grassroots, development, and elite levels.

This course is designed for new and developing Water Polo table officials who want to build confidence, accuracy, and professionalism at the table. It is suitable for school, club, and regional competitions, and for anyone looking to formalise their understanding of table procedures.
Learn the responsibilities of each table role, including secretary, timekeeper, shot clock operator, and exclusion timekeeper. This section also covers how to accurately complete the official scoresheet, including goals, cap numbers, exclusions, timeouts, penalties, and match incidents.
Develop a clear understanding of how to operate the main game clock and the 30-second shot clock. This includes when to start and stop the clocks, manage quarter breaks and timeouts, and correctly apply all shot clock reset situations.
